There weren’t a great many songs as overplayed this festival season as Major Lazer’s collaboration with DJ Snake, “Lean On.” The track had the perfect amount of residual chill trap influence to capitalize on the genre’s popularity before it went the way of dubstep, but MØ’s vocals gave it just enough universal appeal to remain in the music world’s collective queue afterwards.
It looks like Diplo felt like a follow-up was in order, though, as he teamed up with MØ once more on her latest track, “Kamikaze.”
Where “Lean On” tended towards chill trap, “Kamikaze” has no chill whatsoever. MØ’s vocals are markedly more spastic this time around, and from a production standpoint it jumps all over the place as well. It’s not a terrible song by any means, but it certainly lacks what musical maturity “Lean On” had going for it.
With Diplo and Skrillex each doing their own thing lately, it looks like the latter artist must have landed the more promising singer collaboration. Nonetheless, if you listen to “Kamikaze” and like what you hear, then be sure to grab it off iTunes.
