The long-awaited Zombieland 2 is finally due to arrive next year, with director Ruben Fleischer (Venom) and writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Deadpool) re-grouping the original movie’s quartet – Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin and Woody Harrelson – for more horror-comedy hijinks. We were previously told that the human cast would be expanded in the sequel and Deadline has now revealed the first new addition.
Zoey Deutch (Before I Fall, Set It Up) has been announced to be joining in a role that’ll be a new love interest for Eisenberg’s socially awkward Columbus. That’s an unexpected turn, considering the first film ended with Columbus and Stone’s Wichita becoming a couple, so the introduction of Deutch’s character suggests that they’ve either broken up in the years since we last saw them or there’ll be a love triangle that threatens their relationship.
In addition to this bit of casting news, Deadline’s also reporting on a new plot synopsis, which hints at what we can expect – including more road trips across the country, evolved zombies and some old-fashioned domestic issues.
In this next installment, through comic mayhem that stretches from the White House and through the heartland, the Zombie slayers must face off against many new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors. But most of all, they have to face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family.
We don’t know about the other new additions just yet, but Fleischer has previously hinted that there will be another cameo in the follow-up that he believes will give the beloved Bill Murray guest spot from the first one a run for its money. He also teased that a new Zombieland film could even happen every 10 years, an idea which was apparently pitched by Emma Stone.
Zombieland 2 goes before the cameras in January 2019 and will be in cinemas in time for October 11th, which is ten years to the day since the release of the original.
