Even though the future of the DC hero Zachary Levi has brought to life over the course of two Shazam! films is precarious at the very best, the star would still be more than happy to don his cape once more should the powers that be deem it so.
Speaking to Deadline on the Shazam! Fury of the Gods red carpet in Los Angeles, Levi had no doubts about whether or not he would once again step into Shazam’s boots. “Whenever they say, ‘We want you to go be Shazam in this thing,’ I’ll be like, great, let’s go – I wanna do go that,” he told the publication.
As for the plans for his character prior to the James Gunn and Peter Safran era and whether or not he would eventually face off against Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, Levi had inkling that there may have been some form of plan for way down the road, but “nobody ever told him,” so he doesn’t know.
On the subject of Gunn and Safran, Levi had nothing but nice words for DC’s recently-minted co-heads, saying “they’re really excellent leaders,” and trusts where they’re going to take the franchise going forward.
As for the timeline for when there may be a shred of hope for Levi to reprise his character, the actor remains hopeful, but claims that it ultimately falls to “what the people want,” and that the best he can do is “show up and be the best Shazam he can be.” An optimistic take, given Gunn and Safran didn’t so much as flinch after infamously ousting Henry Cavill from his years-long role as Superman, but one can dream.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods arrives in theaters on March 17, 2023. We would advise you to stay away from your TV if you want to go see it spoiler-free, because a TV spot has supposedly given away a big DCEU cameo which happens in the film.
