Despite rumors to the contrary, 20th Century Fox is still planning to release the New Mutants spinoff movie from writer-director Josh Boone.
At least, that’s according to some intel uncovered by the folks at CBN, revealing that New Mutants is still clinging on to that August 2019 release date, which ought to pour ice-cold water over any and all rumors suggesting that the film was in danger of being scrapped altogether. Ditto for Dark Phoenix, the X-Men ensemble drama that is now barreling down on its summer 2019 launch date.
These allegations can naturally be traced back to the impending Disney-Fox merger. It will, through time, signal the introduction of Fox’s X-Men to the wider MCU, but not before the Powers That Be churn out another pair of X-Men movies, not to mention the mooted X-Force film coming from Drew Goddard.
Besides, given most, if not all of the work on New Mutants is now complete, it would be a pretty spectacular write-down if Fox decided to flippantly scrap an edgy genre film worth millions of dollars.
It is, however, worth noting that the information gathered by CBN indicates that the pic’s tentative August 2019 release window is still subject to change, so don’t be too surprised if New Mutants is pushed further back to allow Dark Phoenix (June 7th, 2019) some much-needed breathing space. Because sometimes you can really have too much of a good thing.
Featuring a screenplay by Josh Boone & Knate Lee, along with a collection of Hollywood’s brightest rising stars (see: Williams, Heaton, Taylor-Joy), New Mutants is headed for theaters on August 2nd, 2019 – more than a full year after its original release date – and the X-Men universe will never be the same again.
