Fans are still reeling from the sad news that legendary Marvel creator Stan Lee passed away yesterday at the grand age of 95. It’ll be hard to come to terms with the fact that we won’t see Stan The Man show up for a welcome cameo in Marvel movies in the future, but thankfully, Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige has suggested that Lee already filmed a few cameos for next year’s MCU outings which we can look forward to.
However, don’t expect to see Lee show up in X-Men: Dark Phoenix. The pic based on the mutant super-team co-created by Stan won’t feature the customary cameo from the Marvel icon, according to EW, as the tale of Jean Grey’s descent into the dangerous Dark Phoenix entity will be “taking a more grounded, gritty approach.”
We can certainly see the logic here, as Lee’s cameos typically add a bit of comedy and lightness to the proceedings. Although, that being said, fans look forward to seeing Stan in their Marvel movies no matter what the tone. Fox has never really seemed to understand that, however, as of the many X-Men films made since 2000, Stan’s only appeared in X-Men, X-Men: The Last Stand, Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse.
The last time we saw Stan in a Marvel movie was October’s Venom, which cast him as a kindly passer-by who seemed to know that Eddie Brock was harboring a secret symbiote. Going by Feige’s comments, at least we have a role for Lee in 2019’s Captain Marvel, Avengers 4 and Spider-Man: Far From Home, all of which have completed production. It’s possible that more of his cameos were filmed in advance for 2020’s MCU films, too, but we haven’t heard anything about those at this stage.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix comes from writer/director Simon Kinberg and is set to blast into cinemas – finally, after several delays – on June 7th.
