To say that this past week has been a roller coaster ride for the DCEU and its fans would be a massive understatement.
First, we found out that not only is the Joker getting a solo origin movie that doesn’t take place within the DC Extended Universe, but we also learned that despite Jared Leto not appearing in that particular film, he’s still expected to reprise his role as the Ace of Knaves in Suicide Squad 2 and Gotham City Sirens.
What came as even more of a (welcome) shock was that the as-yet-untitled Joker and Harley Quinn movie that was first teased by DC Entertainment President Geoff Johns at San Diego Comic-Con is moving forward, and that Crazy, Stupid, Love filmmakers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa are in final negotiations to write and direct. Along with that announcement came a rumor which pointed to the film actually taking the place of the aforementioned Gotham City Sirens. That was according to The Tracking Board, who said that the spinoff had been bumped off the slate.
Well, as it turns out, that’s just not true. Coming in to clear the air is Forbes, who say that their sources tell them the project is still very much alive and in development – which is a relief to hear.
The outlet doesn’t give an exact release date for when we can expect to see GCS, but note that it’s a “very different film in terms of concept and the role it plays in the larger DCEU, not to mention nuances of target demographics and character development” compared to the planned Joker and Harley Quinn movie. As such, the studio is most definitely keeping it around.
Of course, there are many questions still to be answered when it comes to Gotham City Sirens, but we’ll be bringing you all the latest as this story unfolds. For now though, tell us, are you happy to hear that the project is still in development, or were you very not excited for it in the first place? Sound off in the comments section!
