Over the past decade, it’s become the norm to wait patiently as the end credits roll on movies in the cinema – not daring to budge from the seat, lest we miss a crucial post-credits sequence. Unarguably, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is responsible for this trend, having used the concept to tease upcoming franchise instalments, and hint at further links between stories. So, given that Wonder Woman will be the fourth film in the DC Extended Universe, and that the third film of that franchise – Suicide Squad – featured a post-credits piece, can we expect to see a little snippet right at the very end? Simply put, no.
Cinema Blend asked this very question of Wonder Woman producer Charles Roven, after a press screening for the movie ran without any additional scenes at the end of the credits. The query was based upon the theory that a post-credits scene might be added to the theatrical release to surprise audiences. Charles Roven confirmed that this would not be the case however, and went on to explain that it is not a standard move for the DCEU.
“I’m not going to say we’d never do one. … There was one in Suicide Squad. But I don’t think that we want to feel that we’re forced to do something just because we didn’t in the past.”
The idea of post-credits scenes is an interesting one – particularly those that are kept secret until release. Audiences have paid their hard-earned cash to see the film, but leaving before the credits end could lead to them missing an important part of the narrative. At the same time, hanging around while the reel of text to spools through, for the sole purpose of waiting for a post-credits sequence that doesn’t materialize, can feel equally disingenuous. In addition, there is an argument to be made that a franchise shouldn’t need to rely on clips occurring after the film has finished to enhance the experience viewers just had, or prime them for the next.
So, it’s a welcome development to hear Charles Roven confirm that there will be no post-credits sequence with Wonder Woman. Viewers can simply relax and enjoy the movie in its entirety. But, it is also important to note that – with or without additional footage – the credits themselves are an essential part of the film. Each person listed has invested their skills, expertise, and experience into delivering that story to us – so if we enjoy the movie at all, it’s surely the case that we should respectfully acknowledge those important contributions, right?
