If the Wonder Woman of 2017 was designed to explore Diana Prince’s mythical origin story, then Patty Jenkins plans to unleash a “full-blown” Amazonian when the sequel arrives in two years’ time.
While doing press for the film’s imminent home video release – August 29th for digital platforms; September 19th for Blu-ray and DVD – Jenkins touched base on the nascent Wonder Woman 2, which now has a release date of December 13th, 2019. After some deliberation, the so-hot-right-now filmmaker is all set to direct Diana’s second big-screen solo outing.
Jenkins believes WW2 will be a “totally different movie” than its predecessor, which was naturally more concerned with Diana’s formative years aboard Themyscira than anything else – save for the epilogue scene, after it seemingly teed up the events of Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon’s Justice League. From curious youngster to naive adult, Wonder Woman’s evolution really resonated with moviegoers across the world, as evidenced by the record-breaking box office cume. But now that those foundations are in place, Patty Jenkins is ready to take the next step.
As Jenkins alludes to below, it’s during the climactic battle with Ares that Diana reaches the peak of her powers, and that’s something that the director plans to focus on come 2019.
The greatest thing about making this [the first Wonder Woman] movie was the fact that you’re really building to the Wonder Woman that we all love, but not until the end of the movie. The most exciting thing about [the sequel] is literally seeing her loose in the world now, living those classic stories. Here’s Wonder Woman, and what can she do? It should be a totally different movie, but a grand and now full-blown Wonder Woman in the world.
Wonder Woman 2 currently has a release date of December 13th, 2019, while the first film is due to hit Blu-ray and DVD in September. Meanwhile, Justice League will see Diana team up with the other members of DC’s finest on November 17th of this year.
