Earlier today, EW dropped some official stills from next year’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (which you can check out above), highlighting an intimate moment between Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) and Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) at a high-society gathering. And according to Affleck, that’s not just a chance encounter – the two know each other both as seemingly normal people and as gifted crimefighters.
“I love the fact that there was this Thomas Crowne Affair, Bond-y sexy scene that they wrote about two people who are pretending to be two different people who each know the secrets of the other person,” Affleck told EW of the scene, which is reminiscent of a scene from one of the Batman animated television series in which the pair come together and dance (as well as the scene in which Wayne and Catwoman had a flirtatious interaction in The Dark Knight Rises).
[zerg]EW’s coverage of the superhero blockbuster also found director Zack Snyder revealing a Man of Steel easter egg he proposed that didn’t pass muster with execs.
“I said, ‘What about at the end of the movie we do a scene where there’s a crate full of kryptonite delivered to Wayne Manor,’” Snyder explained. “Everyone was like…‘Okaay.’ Once you say it out loud it’s a problem because you can’t unsay it.”
It’s definitely for the best that a scene like that wasn’t shoe-horned into Man of Steel, especially because that would have locked the sequel into incorporating Batman despite Affleck not having been cast at the time. It appears, however, that Snyder did find a way to work kryptonite into Batman V Superman, as previously rumored. Accompanying EW’s pic of the Caped Crusader and the Man of Steel locking eyes was this caption:
“If you’re going toe-to-toe with the son of Jor-El, you better come correct. For his climactic rooftop brawl with Superman, Batman outfits himself with a reinforced mech-suit equipped with strength-augmenting armor and, yes, kryptonite. The design resembles the one used for the confrontation between these two in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns.”
Introducing one of Superman’s greatest weaknesses just adds to the film’s sense that the Man of Steel, seemingly omniscient in his standalone pic, is being cut down to size.
Actor Henry Cavill commented on that shift, explaining that Superman definitely doesn’t receive a hero’s welcome from the people of Earth:
“I like to think that ‘Man of Steel’ was the perspective of the world from Clark, Kal-El, looking at the world and trying to exist with in it,” he said. “’Batman v Superman’ is definitely more mankind’s perspective of Superman.”
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice will surely continue to dominate the media spotlight leading up to its Hall H presentation next Saturday at Comic-Con, and we’ll keep you up to date right here at We Got This Covered.
