Witness the dawn of America’s darkest tradition with this eerie new clip for The First Purge, Gerard McMurray’s horror prequel that is now only 48 hours out from its theatrical debut.
Pegged to arrive this Wednesday, July 4th, to coincide with Independence Day in the States – a franchise tradition that dates back to the first Purge movie from James DeMonaco – McMurray’s origins pic is all about the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) and their dark, twisted strategy to bring the country’s crime rate down below one percent.
The result? A miniaturized, 12-hour purge that takes place in “one isolated community.” But as the NFFA soon realize, the primal violence can’t be contained, and it isn’t long before the lawless mayhem spreads its tentacles all across the US of A. It promises to be an exciting expansion of the Purge series, and to celebrate the prequel’s imminent launch, Complex has premiered a tense new clip that highlights the calm before the storm.
After three films in the core Universal series, not to mention that gestating TV show that’s set to launch later this year, James DeMonaco returned to script The First Purge, which is best described as so:
To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.
Casting-wise, DeMonaco and Gerard McMurray have filled their docket with Y’Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez, and Marisa Tomei of Spider-Man: Homecoming fame.
The First Purge journeys back to the calm before the annualized bloodbath, and we’ll be able to see exactly how the New Founding Fathers of America triggered widespread social upheaval on July 4th.
