The Iceman has seen more than a few changes in the prospective cast in the last several months. James Franco and Benecio Del Toro were among the first to jump ship. And now, the latest in this growing list is Maggie Gyllenhaal, who in a surprise move is set to be replaced by none other than Winona Ryder.
Ryder will play the unsuspecting wife in this mob killer biopic. Her husband Richard Kulinski, the notorious Iceman and longtime hitman for the mob, will be played by Michael Shannon. The film will focus on his life and how he methodically kept his two lives separate in order to protect his family.
Other members of the cast include David Schwimmer, as Josh Rosenthal, another killer, Ray Liotta as mob boss Roy Demoe and Chris Evans as Mr. Softee aka Robert Pronge, the mentor assassin of the Iceman.
Production for The Iceman is set to begin in January 2012 and the film will be directed by Ariel Vromen, who also co-wrote the script along with Morgan Land. The random choices in the cast make us a little nervous, especially considering Ryder’s spotty work record as of late – but, the subject of the film has captured the attention of many so it will be interesting to see how the concept translates on film.
