Diana Prince of Themysicra is headed to the United States.
Omega Underground has the scoop, confirming that production on Wonder Woman 2 is expected to commence on May 28th in the UK – four weeks earlier than initially expected – ahead of its planned release in 2019. Following that, June will see the film move across the pond to Washington, D.C.
Why’s that important? Well, given that the city is home to both the White House and the CIA, it’s looking increasingly likely that Diana could end up working alongside the US government in the movie. It’d certainly make sense, given that we know Wonder Woman 2 will take place in the 1980s, with the Cold War and Soviet Union both said to be playing an important part.
Furthermore, OU speculates that having the CIA involved could be how the studio gives us the film’s male lead, or even re-introduces Chris Pine, as has been rumored. That’s just a guess, but it’s interesting to ponder and should provide fans with some food for thought as they wait for more to emerge.
In the meantime, what we can tell you with absolute certainty is that both Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot are back on board as director and lead star, respectively, while we recently learned that Kristen Wiig of Ghostbusters fame has come into contention to play the sequel’s big bad, Cheetah, a feline-esque adversary with enough strength and speed to hold her own against Diana.
Story-wise, like we mentioned above, the titular hero’s second solo adventure – and her first since the wholly forgettable Justice League team-up movie – will be set during the height of the Cold War (i.e. the 1980s), indicating that Jenkins and her team plan to trade trench warfare for subterfuge and nuclear paranoia.
The Expendables co-writer Dave Callaham is the man responsible for Wonder Woman 2‘s story, having signed on to flesh out the original treatment from Jenkins and DC guru Geoff Johns. And while there are still many questions to be answered, fans can continue to look forward to James Wan’s Aquaman movie (December 21st), safe in the knowledge that Diana Prince and her sophomore outing are in good hands.
Said to be imbued with all of the wisdom, wonder, and grace that made the original so special, Wonder Woman 2 has been slated for a release on November 1st, 2019 – far, far away from the launch of J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Episode IX.
