In The Infinity Gauntlet comic book which has inspired Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos wipes out half the universe with the Infinity Stones in order to impress Death. Desperate to win her love, the Mad Titan tries again and again to woo her with his mastery over the powerful weapon before he’s ultimately taken down by The Avengers and Adam Warlock.
Whether or not the movie will follow a similar story arc remains to be seen, but it would be very surprising if Death doesn’t play some sort of role in proceedings. However, with Hela, the Asgardian goddess of death, set to be introduced in Thor: Ragnarok next year, is it possible that she’ll take on that role instead? Sure, she’s a different character, but it would make sense.
[wgtc_youtube video_id=”gXbAM2CZiOg”]Asked just that in a recent interview, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige indicated that it could happen, but warned fans that Avengers: Infinity War could play out differently than expected:
“Anything is possible, but knowledge of the comics can be both beneficial to fans anticipating things, and also misleading. So you’ll have to see.”
As for what Cate Blanchett is bringing to the role, Feige seems very excited for us all to see what she has in store for the God of Thunder when the villain makes her presence felt in Asgard:
“I would be psyched if I were you. Put it this way: Her part is wrapped, and we haven’t done any effects yet. Even without any effects at all — I’m talking dots on her costume, and green screen — it’s amazing.”
If Hela is going to be used as a substitute for Death, chances are we’ll get our first glimpse of that in Thor: Ragnarok. After all, Avengers: Infinity War is still a couple of years away, and if any upcoming Marvel movie is going to be used to tease Thanos’ impending arrival on Earth, that’s got to be it.
