You can go ahead and add Step Brothers 2 to the list of long-rumored sequels that will forever remain a pipe dream, despite generating a metric ton of buzz at one stage or another.
Less than 24 hours after we brought you the somewhat disheartening news that Guillermo Del Toro had packed in Hellboy 3 for good – and it really is for good this time – Will Ferrell has now played down talk of Brennan and Dale staging a family reunion. Chatting to Rolling Stone, the comedy stalwart stressed a need to “resist the temptation” of revisiting existing properties, even if Ferrell has employed a similar tactic before for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues and, more recently, Zoolander 2. But if nothing else, reprising as Ron Burgundy and the fashion mogul Mugatu has seemingly cooled Ferrell’s interest in comedy sequels, at the expense of Step Brothers 2. The Catalina Wine Mixer is all but canceled, folks.
Per Rolling Stone:
“You have to resist the temptation,” the actor told Rolling Stone. “It’s just tough because the things everyone wants you to do sequels of are special because there’s not a sequel of it. I guess we’ll see, but as of now there are no plans. We just don’t want to be doing sequels of everything.”
Step Brothers 2 may have been shoved onto the back-burner, but fans of Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s particular blend of outrageous comedy can look forward to Holmes and Watson, a star-studded spin on Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous sleuth that favors comedy over brooding mysteries. It’ll open on August 3rd, 2018, while Will Ferrell will soon spearhead an underground casino for Andrew J. Cohen’s over-the-top crime caper, The House.
