Even beyond the heroine’s upcoming solo debut and her pivotal role in Avengers: Endgame, it’s clear that Captain Marvel will be a pretty major player in the MCU’s future, but to go one further, some fans have suggested that Carol Danvers just might be about to inherit a position as new leader of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
The latest inspiration for this prediction comes in the form of a Captain Marvel behind-the-scenes featurette that’s started screening in cinemas. As well as offering footage from the interplanetary adventure to come, we get a statement from Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige teasing the central role Carol will play in the saga moving forward:
“Now Captain Marvel is about to take the lead, and be at the forefront of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
Seeing how the Avengers have so far been at the forefront of the MCU, it’s understandable that fans would put two and two together to argue that Carol could be the team’s next leader.
That being said, with no future plans confirmed for the Avengers beyond Endgame, such speculation might well be jumping the gun. While the big team-up movie has done Marvel Studios very well so far, there are other ways to keep the general format going without resorting to an Avengers 5.
In any case, it’s generally expected that the Avengers team, as we know it, will be seeing its last hurrah in next year’s Infinity War sequel, with Tony Stark and Steve Rogers each being the subject of an ongoing stream of theories predicting their respective exits from the saga. We’ll find out what’s to become of the Phase 1 heroes and the team they helped create when Avengers: Endgame his theaters on April 26th, 2019. In the meantime, we can judge for ourselves if Carol is leadership material when Captain Marvel comes out on March 8th.
