Since starring in the 1981 film Raiders of the Lost Ark, Harrison Ford has portrayed the daring archaeologist Indiana Jones in four films within the franchise and will be returning for one last adventure in the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
The film follows an older Indie, facing forced retirement from his position as an archaeology professor due to his unease with the United States government recruiting former Nazis in order to beat the Soviet Union during the 1960s Space Race. If there’s one thing that goes together, it’s Indiana Jones and beating up Nazis, and many fans are hopeful about what is potentially the final film in the franchise, including Ford himself. According to the actor, Dial of Destiny will show Indy in a different phase of his life, as he enters the final phase of his career and deals with his age and limited physical capability. While in a low point of his life as he faces the dissolution of his academic career, the famed archaeologist will embark on a final journey at the behest of his goddaughter, proving that age is no barrier to being a badass.
Dial of Destiny is set about 12 years after the events of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Skull, just prior to the moon landing in 1969, and features new and familiar faces both on-screen and off.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny cast
This will be the first Indiana Jones film to not be directed by Steven Spielberg nor written by George Lucas (though both return as executive producers); instead, James Mangold (Girl, Interrupted, Logan) will take the director seat while the screenplay is written by Jez Butterworth (The Ferryman), John-Henry Butterworth (Ford v Ferrari), David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) and Mangold. Lucasfilms president Kathleen Kennedy is on deck as a producer, along with her husband and frequent co-producer Frank Marshall. Legendary composer John Williams (Indiana Jones, Jaws, Harry Potter) will also be returning to create the film’s score.
Harrison Ford will return as an older Indiana Jones, an archaeologist and university professor. Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, writer on Killing Eve) will play Helena Shaw, Indy’s goddaughter from a friend who hasn’t been shown in the franchise before. Mads Mikkelsen (Doctor Strange, Casino Royale, Hannibal) will play Jürgen Voller, a former Nazi seeking the Dial of Destiny himself and Antonio Banderas (The Mask of Zorro, Puss in Boots) will play Indy’s friend and a reliable boat captain.
Here’s the full cast of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny:
- Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. The prolific actor is returning as the adventurous hero for the 5th and potentially final time. Indy, faced with the prospect of losing his teaching position, goes on a journey to obtain a mysterious and mystical dial.
- Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Helena Shaw. Indy’s goddaughter, who is just as excited about finding treasure as her godfather, although she’s more motivated by money than history. The charming adventurer acts as the catalyst for the new plot after she ropes Indy into her own adventure.
- Mads Mikkelsen as Jürgen Voller. A former Nazi now hired by NASA, Voller was prevented from retrieving it by Indy during World War II and is searching for the dial in order to make right past mistakes.
- Antonio Banderas as Renaldo. Renaldo is an old friend of Indy’s as well as a boat captain.
- John Rhys-Davies (Indiana Jones, The Lord of the Rings) as Sallah. Sallah is an old friend of Indy’s who helped him find the Holy Grail and the Ark of the Covenant.
- Toby Jones (Captain America: The First Avenger, The Hunger Games) as Basil Shaw. An archaeology professor at Oxford, Shaw is an old friend of Indy’s as well as Helena’s father.
- Boyd Holbrook (The Sandman) as Klaber. He is Voller’s right-hand man in the current (1969) story.
- Ethann Isidore as Teddy Kumar, Helena’s sidekick.
- Shaunette Renée Wilson (The Resident) as Mason, an undercover CIA agent.
- Thomas Kretschmann (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) as Colonel Weber, a Nazi who worked with Voller in 1944.
- Karen Allen (Indiana Jones) as Marion Ravenwood, Indy’s wife. After first appearing in Raiders of the Lost Ark, Marion has been in every film as Jones’ on-and-off love interest.
- Olivier Richters (Black Widow) as Hauke. Richters, a professional bodybuilder — who holds the record as the tallest in the profession — plays one of Voller’s henchmen.
- Mark Killeen (The Callback Queen) will play an unnamed henchman of Voller’s.
