While Scream 4 was a surprising box office disappointment when it opened in April, the franchise’s director, Wes Craven, is claiming that a fifth installment is likely happening. Craven still believes the third sequel, which drew in $97 million worldwide at the box office against a $40 million budget, will kick off a second Scream trilogy.

/Film is reporting that Craven has said that when he initially met with Scream 4 writer and producer Kevin Williamson, he planned a Scream 5 and 6. The director added:

The idea was that we were doing the first in a new trilogy. We had to wait to see if we made enough money on each film to make the next one viable. If that happens, those two will come up with the concepts and an idea that is worth fulfilling.

However, Scream 4s final worldwide gross was short of the $110 million executive producer Harvey Weinstein had predicted. Whether or not Scream 5 and 6 will happen is still debatable; Craven has also said that he still hasn’t received a call from Bob Weinstein, the founder of Dimension Films, which distributed Scream 4.

Craven added that he doesn’t expect to receive a call until a story is pitched to the Weinsteins but the director does have the first look option to be the helmer for the next two sequels if they do happen.

With the ambiguous ending of Scream 4 and its disappointing final gross, continuing the series seems unlikely.
