Sci-Fi Pick: The Fourth Kind (2009)

Among the many sub-genres of sci-fi, one that frequently stands out above the rest is sci-fi horror. That’s especially true when it comes to films about aliens. Thank about it – there are few times where humans would be more powerless and thus more terrified than when a superior race wanted to take over our planet. With that in mind, my recommendation this week comes from one of the most enjoyable scary sci-fi flicks on Netflix: The Fourth Kind.

Set in Nome, Alaska, The Fourth Kind features an odd mix of “found footage” and actor dramatizations of the events surrounding a series of abductions in that isolated northern town. Dr. Abigail Tyler’s (Charlotte Milchard & Milla Jovovich) husband was murdered in his sleep, or so that’s what everyone assumes. Seeking the truth, as she speaks with more and more patients about their own personal experiences, she begins to expect that there really is something crazy happening in Nome. Then, when replaying a recording from her own tape recorder, Abby hears that she was possibly kidnapped by some non-human as well, even though she has no memory of the incident.

Occasionally the different filming methods are shown side-by-side, creating a fresh yet perplexing watch at times. If you’re able to get past such terribly odd editing decisions, you’ll find a movie that is interesting, exciting, and flat-out terrifying at times. Personally, I don’t want to be sucked out of bed to be probed by little green men, but even worse than that would be coming back to Earth afterwards. It’s the moments where people recall their time on the ship that are the scariest and the best. It may not be the highest quality of sci-fi movies, but it’s definitely a fun one that’s worth a free Netflix stream.

Plus, I never thought a movie could make me get nervous about owls –  those fluffy bastards.

That’s it for today, but be sure to tune in next week though for another edition of We Got Netflix Covered! Also, be sure to leave a comment and let us know if you enjoyed any of these picks.
