Woody Allen may be pushing 80, but old age hasn’t stopped him from making movies at a breakneck pace. The man has directed at least one film per year for almost four decades now, and he doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. His latest effort, Magic In The Moonlight, is a comedy set during the 1920s in the south of France. Like with most of Allen’s films, it boasts an impressive ensemble cast that features the likes of Emma Stone, Colin Firth, Marcia Gay Harden, Hamish Linklater and Jacki Weaver.
Today, Sony Pictures Classics has dropped the very first trailer for the film and, while Allen has not been the most consistent director in the last decade, this one looks pretty delightful. Emma Stone plays a young woman who claims she can communicate with spirits. Colin Firth’s character has been given the task of figuring out whether or not she is a fraud. The more time he spends with the young woman, however, the more he begins to fall for her.
From the outset, the most obvious comparison to make with this film is Allen’s Midnight In Paris, which was also set in France and contained supernatural elements. Darius Khondji, who shot Midnight In Paris, has been brought back for Magic In The Moonlight and judging from the trailer, this one has the potential to be another visual treat.
Of course, the real question is how will the film stack up to Allen’s last effort, the critically acclaimed Blue Jasmine? It’s still a bit too early to tell, but from this footage alone, I’m already feeling optimistic.
Magic In The Moonlight hits theaters on July 25th. In the meantime, be sure to take a look at the trailer below and let us know what you think.
