Chilean director Sebastian Silva has spotted something in the serial mumbler Michael Cera that other filmmakers have not. Cera’s typical geek is a distant memory when you have a look at what he’s been up to recently. Silva cast him in two features which shot back to back. One is the Crystal Fairy, set for release later this summer. The other is Magic Magic, which now has a brand new trailer available.
Magic Magic debuted earlier this year at Sundance and received mixed reviews. The film tells the story of a young woman who decides to go on vacation. Normal enough so far, yes? What happens when she arrives is something altogether abnormal. The girl, played by Juno Temple, slowly begins to lose the plot. That’s pretty much the worst thing that can happen when you go on holiday. It’s bad enough losing your worldwide adapter plug, but losing your marbles? Cripes. She encounters a bunch of folks, and as per usual, no-one believes her when she explains she’s not feeling quite right.
Cera co-stars as one of those souls she comes into contact with, alongside Sucker Punch‘s Emily Browning. It’s a pleasant change to see Cera braving new terrain. He’s an absolute nutter with a taste for dodgy coats. The always brilliant Temple anchors the story, and damn, has she got a lot to contend with. This two minute preview plays out like David Lynch’s remake of Deliverance. Yikes.
Magic Magic will bypass cinemas and be available on DVD August 6th.
