Is 2019 about to be the best year ever for Batman fans? It certainly looks that way. We already know that Warner Bros. is going all in on the iconic hero – and why wouldn’t they? – with plans to make The Batman, Batgirl, Nightwing and Gotham City Sirens. But now, a new report suggests that those four films may all be releasing in the same year.
Over on Reddit, a leak surfaced which, among other things, detailed the studio’s plans for their upcoming slate of Bat-related projects. According to the report, since 2019 will be the 80th anniversary of the character, WB will be debuting all of the aforementioned movies, giving fans an absolute overdose of Batman and everything related to him.
From what we understand, David Ayer’s Gotham City Sirens will land on Valentine’s Day weekend, followed by Chris McKay’s Nightwing on Memorial Day weekend. After that, Joss Whedon’s Batgirl will arrive in August and finally, Matt Reeves’ The Batman will swoop into theatres in November. Excited yet? Good, because there’s more. You didn’t think they’d stop at just 4 films, did you?
The Reddit report goes on to reveal that in addition to all that, the studio will also release two animated Batman movies in 2019, with one being an adaptation of Batman: The Long Halloween, a 13-issue limited series published in the late 90s. For those unfamiliar with the critically acclaimed comic, it tells the story of Batman’s early days of crime fighting, when he encounters “a mysterious killer named Holiday, who murders people on holidays, one each month. Working with District Attorney Harvey Dent and Captain James Gordon, Batman races against the calendar as he tries to discover who Holiday is before he claims his next victim each month, while attempting to stop the crime war between two of Gotham’s most powerful families, Maroni and Falcone.”
Given that all these projects – well, the live-action ones – will be featuring a lot of the same characters, it does make sense to release them close together. But all in the same year? Probably no one expected that, and while it’s certainly exciting to hear, we just hope that none of these films are rushed out the door simply to make it on time for the Bat’s 80th anniversary. Then again, 2019 is a long ways away and with all 4 DCEU projects already in development, there’s more than enough time for everything to come together.
The same Reddit report went on to detail a few other things, like a possible director for The Flash and a new character in Suicide Squad 2, but this is by far the most exciting reveal and if it proves to be true, then 2019 is going to be an absolutely massive year for both the studio and Batman fans everywhere.
