Warner Bros. Hands The Conjuring 3 A Release Date

We've been told a few times now that The Conjuring 3 will act as a departure from the standard haunted house formula of the first two outings, with reports telling us that the pic will focus its story around a high-stakes legal case. If you were looking for further assurance that the horror threequel won’t be more of the same though, star Patrick Wilson doubled down on these claims late last year.

We’ve been told a few times now that The Conjuring 3 will act as a departure from the standard haunted house formula of the first two outings, with reports telling us that the pic will focus its story around a high-stakes legal case. If you were looking for further assurance that the horror threequel won’t be more of the same though, star Patrick Wilson doubled down on these claims late last year.

Speaking to Digital Spy, the star touched on his involvement in Annabelle Comes Home, before teasing that we should expect the unexpected when it comes to his return to the series:

“We just finished Annabelle 3 which is cool. It’s nice to dip our toes into that franchise a little bit. Conjuring 3 will be different than anything we’ve seen, which is fun.”

That’s certainly exciting to hear, and now, we know exactly when we’ll get to see this supposedly very different film. And that’s because Warner Bros. announced tonight that The Conjuring 3 will creep into theaters on September 11th, 2020.

Given that that release date is still so far off, we really don’t know a whole lot about the threequel just yet, but as we alluded to above, it’ll have Ed and Lorraine look into the case of a man on trial for murder who uses demonic possession as his legal defense. Producer James Wan has also confirmed that, like the two Conjuring movies before it, it’ll be based on one of the Warrens’ case files.

Speaking of Wan, since the Aquaman director won’t be getting behind the camera here, the torch will pass to Michael Chaves, who previously impressed Wan – and a lot of critics, too – with his work on buzzy horror flick The Curse of La Llorona. We’ll find out how he measures up to his predecessor though when The Conjuring 3 hits theaters on September 11th, 2020.
