Deadline is reporting tonight that Warner Bros. has finally set a release date for James Wan’s Aquaman, as the film will swim into theatres on October 5th, 2018.

Portrayed by Jason Momoa, we first saw the titular hero in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which arrived back in March. It was only a brief glimpse to tease his involvement in the DCEU, but the King of the Seven Seas will have a considerably larger role in next year’s Justice League, before getting his own solo effort under the direction of James Wan.

With the film so far off, we really know very little about it at this point. However, Wan has compared it to a “classic swashbuckling adventure” in the past, even going so far as to liken his take on the character to Wolverine. It’s all part of the director’s effort to ensure that Aquaman isn’t a joke anymore once the film comes out.

After all, fans have often ridiculed the hero in the past, seeing him as something of a punchline because of the misconception that his only superpower is that he can chat with the fish (the costume probably doesn’t help matters, either). When Wan’s done with him though, we’re pretty confident that people will look at the character quite differently.

Aquaman will begin shooting in Australia next year, with a cast that also includes Amber Heard and Willem Dafoe. Now that a release date is locked in, stay tuned for more casting announcements, as they’re sure to arrive in the months to come.
