It seems that Universal is getting excited about an up-and-coming creative trio, and such excitement has prompted the studio to move quickly on a mysterious spec script titled Space Race. The creative trio in question is comprised of director Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane), writer Daniel Kunka (12 Rounds), and producer Dylan Clark (the Planet Of The Apes franchise) – and Space Race will be the product of their ongoing collaboration.
Plot details have not yet been revealed, but it’s described as “high concept” – which is unsurprising, given that it was, apparently, originally borne of an idea by Dan Trachtenberg. Though the filmmaker has few writing credits to his name, Trachtenberg has proven himself to be drawn to dramatic tales that are very specific and intimate in nature, while dealing with bigger themes. Writer Daniel Kunka, on the other hand, previously wrote the John Cena-starring action film 12 Rounds, directed by Renny Harlin. His collaborative relationship with Trachtenberg is becoming highly productive, since the pair are also developing a crime drama for Universal, titled Crime Of The Century. Undoubtedly, the combination of Trachtenberg’s eye for big ideas with claustrophobic tension, and Kunka’s action-writing skills, makes for an exciting prospect indeed.
Dan Trachtenberg and Daniel Kunka are coming together on Space Race for producer Dylan Clark, who once supervised Kunka during his time as Story Editor at Universal. It seems that Clark has identified great talents within the Universal stable, and assembled them to bring Daniel Kunka’s spec script to life. There is currently no indication as to when cameras might roll on this project, nor who we might see filling out the cast list – but with the impressive success of his 2016 film 10 Cloverfield Lane, we can surely expect a great deal of interest in snapping up those roles.
