James Ponsoldt’s latest film, The Spectacular Now, premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival to some rave reviews, with critics referring to it as “sincere and refreshing” and “one of the best coming of age movies of our generation.” Now the film finally has a trailer, allowing the rest of us to get a small taste of what some have been fortunate enough to have seen several months ago.

The Spectacular Now tells the story of “a hard-partying high school senior [whose] philosophy on life changes when he meets the not-so-typical ‘nice girl.'” From that small synopsis, it sounds like your typical high school romance flick, but from the trailer, it actually looks like a rather sweet film that boasts some impressive performances from its young stars.

The film stars Miles Teller, who starred in the vastly underrated film Rabbit Hole (in addition to the party films Project X and 21 & Over), and Shailene Woodley, of The Descendants, as the young couple. What also peeks my interest about the project is the fact that it was written by the co-writers of (500) Days of Summer (Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber), one of my favorite films from 2009.

(500) Days of Summer dealt with a relationship in a fascinating manner, telling us the story completely out of order over its 500-day length. Even if that was all they had under their belts, it would still make their latest project a must-see given their ability to handle romance in an intriguing fashion.

Ponsoldt’s previous film, Smashed, is a somewhat engaging tale of a couple torn apart by alcoholism. It might not have been incredibly original, but it did feature some good performances from its stars, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul.

The Spectacular Now, which also stars Winstead, Brie Larson, Jennifer Jason Lee, and Kyle Chandler, has been making its way around the festival circuit and is due to hit theaters in a limited release starting on August 2nd. With any luck, it’ll pop up in a theater near you.
