It’s been over a year since Seth Rogen and his team of regular collaborators delivered a ‘bromance’ to our screens, and it seems the filmmakers intend to make up that time by gifting unto us the perfect comedy combination of Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anthony Mackie, in The Night Before – for which we now have a new trailer.
Directed and co-written by Jonathan Levine (50/50), along with co-writers Evan Goldberg (This Is The End), and newcomers Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir, The Night Before features a supporting cast comprised of Mindy Kaling, Lizzy Caplan and Jillian Bell, among others. It tells the heartwarming tale of three best friends observing their annual tradition of a Christmas Eve blow-out for the final time, as they are forced to accept the fact that their lives have moved on, and they are all adults.
The combination of comedy talent here has delivered worthwhile entertainment on numerous previous occasions, and with Jonathan Levine at the helm, it can be assumed that this endeavour will warrant a place on that list. The trailer does indicate, though, that this is a ‘bromance’ through-and-through, meaning we can expect the female characters to be thinly drawn, and mostly present to pass haughty judgement on the antics of the men – whose boyish, roguish charm probably leads to the women finding them to be totally lovable after all.
In discussing the genesis of this Christmas story, Seth Rogen explained to Collider that it began with Jonathan Levine, who brought the idea to the star, and his producing partner, Evan Goldberg.
“He explained kind of his vision and reminded us of all the Christmas movies we loved growing up and all of the nostalgia you get to play with, and the fact that there kind of is this weird void when it comes to, you know, Christmas movies aimed at our generation and just generally being the type of movie that people like us would be excited to go see.”
The Night Before, then, is intended to plug that void, and provide a new generation with a Christmas favourite. Audiences will discover whether it makes the cut when it arrives in theatres on November 20th, 2015.
