Trailer For Michael Haneke’s Amour

It's quite possible that many people reading this have never even heard of the talented writer/director Michael Haneke. He's the man behind such fascinating films as Cache, which tells the tale of a family being terrorized by surveillance tapes, and The White Ribbon, which tells of strange events in a small village. The latter earned him the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, an honor that was once again bestowed upon him earlier this year for his latest work, Amour.

Today, thanks to First Showing, we have the trailer for Amour, which is rather cryptic as to what the film is about, so to assist in this matter, here’s a synopsis:

Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) are in their eighties. They are cultivated, retired music teachers and their daughter, who is also a musician, lives abroad with her family. One day, Anne has an attack and the couple’s bond of love is severely tested.

Given the excellent work that Haneke has done before, I’m more than willing to give this a chance, though he has not been without his faults. He was also responsible for the dreadful Funny Games in 1997, a film he remade in English for some bizarre reason ten years later. Let’s just hope his latest effort is more in line with the films I mentioned at the top of this article.

Amour will be released into limited theaters on December 19th.
