Having seen Jersey Boys three times now, you can definitely say that I’m pretty excited for its arrival on the big screen. With Clint Eastwood behind the camera, and several of the original cast members from the Broadway play reprising their roles, all signs point to success for this one. Though we got our first look at the film back in January, with the image seen above, today we finally have the first footage and I must say, I’m already sold.
For those unfamiliar with the Broadway sensation, Jersey Boys tells the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, a very successful rock/pop band from the 1960s who are often counted as one of the best-selling musical groups of all time, having sold nearly 100 million records worldwide. The play that the film will be based on has also been a huge success, opening in 2005 and bringing in over $1 billion in ticket sales.
Eastwood’s adaptation certainly has a lot to live up to, but judging by what we see here, I think that the film will definitely please fans of the original. For one, casting Broadway actors in the lead roles (well, three out of the four lead roles) was a great choice, and it looks like it will definitely pay off. Most of these guys will be complete unknowns to moviegoers, but they all look very comfortable with the material and in their roles.
With a film like this though, the biggest focus is going to be on the singing and dance numbers and while it’s a bit hard to fully judge that just from a trailer alone, I think that Eastwood has pulled it off. Jersey Boys looks like a ton of fun and I can guarantee you that it will have audiences singing along to their favorite songs.
If you can’t tell, I’m giddy with excitement to catch the film when it opens in a few months and so far, I’m really liking what I’ve seen from it.
Jersey Boys opens on June 20th, 2014. Check out the first trailer, and plot summary, below and let us know how you think the film will hold up to its Broadway counterpart.
Jersey Boys is based on the real-life rags to riches story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons who went from the street corners for New Jersey to massive musical success with songs such as Oh What A Night, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Rag Doll, Sherry, and Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You. The show is one of the most successful ones still running on Broadway. It opened in 2005 and has sold over $1 billion in tickets not only in New York, but all over the world partially because of its relatable, inspiring story of working hard and fulfilling your dreams. More so it’s the rare musical where almost everyone who sees it knows all the songs before stepping in to the theater.
