First Trailer For Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters

There's been a bit of concern regarding Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. It was delayed from earlier this year to next year, which made a lot of people think that there must be major issues with the project. On top of that, we've barely gotten a look at the project, that is, until now.

Today we have the first trailer for the film, which stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the titular duo who become bounty hunters, tracking down witches 15 years after their traumatic gingerbread-house incident.

First impressions of the trailer leave me a little mixed. On the one hand, it looks like it could be a fun, silly romp, taking a fairy tale and giving it a strange twist. On the other hand, it could turn into a dull, explosion filled film that merely tries to cram it full of action sequences. I’m hoping for the former to be true.

It comes from director Tommy Wirkola, whose most famous work to date is Dead Snow, a zombie film that wasn’t terrible, but didn’t really add anything new to the genre. This is certainly a change-up in genre, but hopefully he can pull off something interesting with this particular mash-up.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, which also stars Famke Janssen, Peter Stormare, Derek Mears, and Thomas Mann, will arrive in theaters on January 11, 2013.
