The heist film really needs to get its due. If it’s well done, it can be sexy, violent and as mind-bending as an art house feature. And of all countries, Britain certainly does its heist movies well: The Italian Job, anyone? So it’s no surprise that the trailer for Danny Boyle’s heist movie Trance looks pretty damn awesome.
James McAvoy is an art auctioneer who lost his memory somewhere along the way – based on the trailer, I’m assuming it’s because Vincent Cassel’s art thief hit him really hard in the head – and so he goes to hypnotherapist Rosario Dawson to get it back. But of course there are ulterior motives: it looks like Dawson is working for Cassel, who wants information concerning the whereabouts of a painting. Information that is stored in McAvoy’s little noggin. Of course, there will be exchanging loyalties, subterfuge, betrayal and, as always, a little bit of sex along the way to finding that elusive painting.
Honestly, this looks great. Excellent cast – not a big McAvoy fan, but he’s beginning to grow on me; love Cassel and Dawson – with a great director, and some pretty heady cinematography, if the trailer is anything to go on. I also love me a heist movie. While I was underwhelmed by Boyle’s 127 Hours, his style would work well for a subject matter like this. This looks almost like a throwback to Boyle’s earlier Shallow Grave, which also took a well-known crime genre and played with it, to remarkable effect. For the first time in awhile, I’m really excited for a Danny Boyle film.
Trance opens in the UK on March 27, 2013. Hopefully we’ll get to see it in the US not long after.
Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think. Is Boyle overextending himself, or does this look like many forms of awesome?
