Serving as the screenwriting debut for Cormac McCarthy, one of the greatest authors alive, Ridley Scott’s The Counselor has been one of the most anticipated films of 2013 for good reason. Aside from the two names already listed, the film boasts an all-star cast with A-listers such as Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, and many, many more. As if you needed another reason to be excited for this movie, a new trailer has released, and it does not disappoint.

For those still not familiar with the plot, the film tells the story of a respected lawyer living in the Southwest who is looking to make a quick buck after proposing to his girlfriend (Penelope Cruz). He ends up getting in contact with a man named Reiner (Bardem) who is able to offer a drug trafficking job. Crossing that line into the criminal world shows the lawyer just how deep a small glimpse into a darker world can pull you.

This trailer shows most of the main characters in fairly good detail and gives a small look at the plot. It definitely is a gritty trailer, further confirming the dark tone that most have expected the film is going to have, as almost every line spoken has an ominous feeling behind it. It doesn’t give too much away, but there are some great interactions between characters, especially Bardem and Fassbender, and it’s an exciting teaser for the film.

This should definitely be one of the must-see films of the fall. Everything Scott directs has my attention, but considering the phenomenal cast he has to work with here, this could be one of his best in a long time. Even though McCarthy has never directly written a film before, the adaptations of his novels No Country For Old Men and The Road both turned out to be excellent films as well as top-notch novels. Hopefully The Counselor channels that success.

The Counselor will be in theaters October 25, 2013 and also stars Dean Norris, John Leguizamo, Rosie Perez, Natalie Dormer, and Cameron Diaz.
