Sometimes the most-used formulas are the most-used for a reason. A prime example of that is haunted house movies. No matter how many we’ve seen over the years, there’s still always something unsettling about the thought of having a ghost for a roommate. In recent years, few have used that formula better than Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions, and they’re going to try to do it at least one more time with Home, which now has Topher Grace attached to star.
Adam Alleca’s script focuses on a man who inherits a mansion from his deceased parents after being released from a mental institution. After a series of disturbing events, he begins to think the giant house is haunted. The film will be directed by Dennis Iliadis, who’s best known for the remake of The Last House On The Left in 2009, and will co-star Patricia Clarkson.
The project was originally set-up through Wes Craven’s Craven/Maddalena Films with Brittany Snow attached to star. That didn’t go anywhere, but then Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Killoran partnered with Graham King to produce the project. Still, there wasn’t much real progress until a couple months ago when Blum got involved. Though we haven’t heard any proposed release date for this project or even a production schedule, settling on a lead is a huge step forward.
Personally, I’m pretty optimistic about this one. Grace is always enjoyable to watch and Blumhouse usually turns out entertaining horror. While I’m not a huge fan of Iliadis’ The Last House On The Left, there have been far worse horror films in recent years and it did have its bright spots. I’d say this project has more working for it than against it right now, so it’ll be interesting to see who else is added to the cast.
