Having suitably spooked horror fans with his expertly crafted thriller Get Out, Peele dove deeper into the American psyche, resulting in the deeply unsettling Us. For all of his barnstorming success, though, the director clearly isn’t one to rest on his laurels.

Not only is he bringing The Twilight Zone into the 21st century, but Peele is beginning to make serious headway on a reboot of Candyman, which currently has Nia DaCosta on board to direct. Any further details are being kept under lock and key, far away from the prying eyes of the public, but while appearing on the Sofa King Cool podcast (h/t Bloody Disgusting), Tony Todd did promise some applause-worthy moments to come from next year’s horror rebirth.

Out of the blue, I got a phone call from Jordan Peele. We’re still waiting for the contract, but the way he explained it to me was that it’s gonna be applause-worthy moments. That’s his words. No matter what happens with that, it’s gonna just put renewed attention on the original.

That’s Todd there, recalling an abrupt phone call from Jordan Peele himself. Perhaps more than anything else, it’s a timely reminder that Peele is prepared to channel all of his creative energies into Candyman, as he looks to reinvent the ’90s boogeyman for a modern-day audience.

Doing so won’t be easy, of course, given the uptick in special effects and jump-scares. But the likes of It and last year’s Hereditary are living proof that there is still a thirst for old-school horror movies – let’s just hope Candyman is able to tick all boxes when it eventually opens in theaters.

Mind you, there’s currently no mention of a release date for Jordan Peele’s Candyman reboot; all we know for sure is that it’ll be with us sometime next year. More info on this project as it begins to coalesce.
