With Spider-Man: Far From Home set to storm cinemas in a matter of days, I can’t help noticing how the character has matured in very short order during Tom Holland’s tenure. Think about it: since 2016, the young actor has played the enduring icon in as many movies as Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield combined, those being Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and the aforementioned Far From Home. But I guess that’s to be expected now that Peter Parker’s part of a cinematic universe.
Now that Holland already boasts such an impressive resume, I’m sure some of you reading this may wonder for how much longer he’ll stick around. Well, as he told Rotten Tomatoes in a recent interview, he’s probably not going anywhere anytime soon:
“I honestly would play Spider-Man until I can’t walk anymore. I love this character so much and it was my childhood dream to play this character. I’m loving it and really enjoying it and what we can do with this movie and the people we can touch and the amazing things we can do with the platform this movie gives us.”
Of course, Holland will probably move on at some point, but we have to consider the possibility of him pulling a Hugh Jackman by sticking around for the long haul. I think the obvious next step is a threequel in the line of flicks started by 2017’s Homecoming, but we could see this version of Spidey making cameos in other Marvel movies soon enough.
But if Tom’s dreams were to be made reality, then his predecessors, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, could be lured to return for a live action Spider-Verse film. And while we’re at it, Sony Pictures is still dying for a crossover involving Holland’s Webhead and Tom Hardy’s Venom. Time will tell what happens, but fingers remain crossed for both.
Spider-Man: Far From Home arrives in theaters on July 2nd.
