Back in May, Kirsten Dunst – who played Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy – memorably made her feelings on the subsequent films to star the wall-crawler very clear. The actress remains loyal to the Tobey Maguire version of the character and believes that the two reboots of the franchise that have appeared since Spider-Man 3 landed in 2007 were purely fuelled by greed.
“We made the best ones, so who cares? I’m like, ‘You make it all you want.’ They’re just milking that cow for money. It’s so obvious. You know what I mean?’”
While chatting with Movies ‘N’ Co UK, the star of one of those reboots – Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s Tom Holland – was asked what he thought about Dunst’s comments, and here’s what he had to say.
You know, she’s entitled to her own opinion and I’m not one to judge at all. I definitely am not doing this movie for the money. I mean, it’s a job that I think anyone would do regardless of what you were getting paid, you know? All I know is I had the greatest time on this movie and I absolutely loved it and, you know, if she doesn’t want to go and see it, I don’t really care. I don’t dislike her in any way for what she said and she’s entitled to her own opinion, so it’s all cool.”
It’s a very measured response from Holland, and it’s clear that he definitely didn’t do the film solely for the money. After all, the actor has spoken many times about how much the Raimi movies meant to him growing up, so it’s probably somewhat hurtful for one of those films’ stars to rag on his efforts.
To be fair to Dunst, though, she does have a point that the decision to make new Spidey movies came from the studio big-wigs who didn’t want to waste one of the most lucrative heroes around. If the actress would watch Spider-Man: Homecoming, though, she’d see that some fresh, fun adventures can come out of these corporate decisions.
