Tom Holland Had A Role In Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse But It Got Cut

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opened the doors to a multiverse full of Spider-people on the big screen for the first time, but it could have connected to the live-action Spider-Man movies as well. We've previously heard that Tobey Maguire was going to return as Peter B. Parker, ultimately voiced by Jake Johnson, and now we've learned that another Spidey could've shown up for a cameo: the MCU's Tom Holland.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opened the doors to a multiverse full of Spider-people on the big screen for the first time, but it could have connected to the live-action Spider-Man movies as well. We’ve previously heard that Tobey Maguire was going to return as Peter B. In an interview with JOE, Holland dropped the bombshell that he was set to cameo in the animated movie at some point. He even revealed exactly what the scene would’ve consisted of:

“At one point I was supposed to be in it. There was going to be another Peter Parker [in addition to the one voiced by Jake Johnson]. There was like a scene in a train station or something, and it was going to be like an Easter egg. I was going to walk through the background or something, and say like ‘Hey, kid.’”

It’s unclear whether Holland actually recorded the brief line that he mentions above, but for whatever reason the filmmakers must’ve decided to remove his role during development. It could be to do with why they decided not to hire Maguire in the end, which according to co-director Peter Ramsey, is because they feared that introducing his version would’ve confused more casual moviegoers.

Alternatively, could it have been some corporate issues that prevented Holland from appearing? We’ve been led to believe that Sony has all the say when it comes to using Holland’s Spider-Man in their movies, but he is Marvel Studios’ take on the character, so there must have to be some agreement between the two. That said, Kevin Feige did recently say that a Spidey/Venom crossover is out of his hands, so who knows?

In any case, fingers crossed Holland will appear in one of the many Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequels Sony is working on. In the meantime, be sure to catch him in Spider-Man: Far From Home from July 2nd.
