Tom Hardy is an actor who finds himself in higher demand with each passing year, and has several high-profile projects either in the works or thrown his way on a regular basis. One recent endeavor was David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, which he unfortunately had to drop out of because of a commitment to Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant, which required extensive reshoots. Fret not though, because it may not be too long before we see the Dark Knight Rises alum back in the DC Comics universe again.
While speaking with Collider, Hardy teased that he’s got a mysterious DC adaptation in his pipeline. Of course, he didn’t specifically detail what it may be, but did lay the intrigue on pretty thick:
“I actually got something cooking with Warner Bros., which is also a comic book, it’s a DC thing which is kind of… It’s really good actually, it contains elements of all kinds of stuff. From Ocean’s Eleven, to Batman, you can get all the wrappers out and it would be a big, really cool, Technicolor, Pulp Fiction… It’s a psychological fuckfest, it’s absolutely awesome. It’s as if you would take Transmetropolitan and make it happen, but it’s not that out there it’s something which is much more real world. IT could be like Heat, it could be fucking awesome.”
As if that’s not frustratingly vague enough, Hardy seemed to confirm that this isn’t part of the current DC film slate that stretches from Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice next year to the Green Lantern reboot in 2020.
[zerg]In fact, he said that “it’s not even a movie,” but something just as exciting and perhaps a little more risky:
“It’s already… It’s real estate, it’s PRIME real estate which is sitting there right under everybody’s nose that no one’s really thought about yet and it goes TV and movie, it’s awesome. I can’t believe that nobody has even – I know they thought of it but no one has actually blown life into it yet.”
While there are plenty of “psychological fuckfests” in DC’s pantheon (ever read a Grant Morrison book?), it’s almost impossible to decipher what Hardy could be teasing. It could be something like Doom Patrol or a left-field choice like The Metal Men, or even something from DC’s Vertigo or various other imprints. Maybe an adaptation of Fables or The Invisibles? Oh, the possibilities are simply endless…
