It’s been five years since Angels & Demons took flight, and Sony Pictures is getting the band back together for a fiery encore in this year’s Inferno, Ron Howard’s third religious caper that heralds the return of Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon.
Due to open in October, IMDb has premiered a moody new poster for the long-awaited threequel that, for a time, appeared to be doomed to the fiery pits of development hell for all eternity. But low and behold, Howard and Hanks have circled back to the cult thriller franchise, itself based on Dan Brown’s literary sensation.
As the fourth entry into Brown’s series, Inferno opens at a time when “Robert Langdon (Hanks) wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia. There, he teams up with Sienna Brooks, a doctor he hopes will help him recover his memories and prevent a madman from releasing a global plague connected to Dante’s “Inferno.”
Aiming to bring humanity to its knees with said plague is Ben Foster’s transhumanist scientist, Bertrand Zobrist, someone with a deep connection to the occult and all the nightmarish forces it represents. If The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons are anything to go by, we can expect Ron Howard’s threequel to be a globe-trotting affair riddled with head-scratching mysteries – and hopefully not too many head-scratching plot points. Rogue One star Felicity Jones, Sidse Babett Knudsen (The Duke Of Burgundy), Omar Sy and Irrfan Khan complete the cast.
Tom Hanks stands between Bertrand Zobrist and global upheaval when Ron Howard’s Inferno opens on October 28, 2016.
