Jack Reacher is many things. A trained killer, a lone wolf, a one-man army; all attributes channeled through Tom Cruise in Christopher McQuarrie’s 2012 adaptation of Lee Child’s pulse-pounding novel series.
Four years later and though McQuarrie currently has his hands full with Paramount’s Mission: Impossible series – replaced at the helm by Edward Zwick – Cruise is primed to reprise his role as Child’s restless former major with Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
Pegged to arrive in October, the sequel has been pitched as a relatively self-contained experience – not unlike Child’s novels – welcoming How I Met Your Mother star Cobie Smulders into the fray as a disgraced commanding officer. Turning to Cruise’s agent in a time of need, it’s now up to Jack Reacher to shed his lone wolf status and ultimately buddy up with his newfound partner in crime.
Adapted from the 2013 novel of the same name, Cruise’s war hero will journey “back to his old military base in Virginia to take a woman to dinner who is now the commanding officer. By the time he gets there, she has been arrested, and Reacher finds himself being charged with pummeling one guy and fathering a child with a woman.” Robert Catrini, Danika Yarosh, Aldis Hodge, Patrick Heusinger, Holt McCallany and Austin Hebert will also feature in Never Go Back.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back pummels its way into theaters in time for October 21.
