Though I didn’t detest 2011’s Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds as some others may have, I found that it ultimately fell short of what animated offerings such as First Flight and Emerald Knights achieved. That said, I remain optimistic for the long-gestating Green Lantern Corps.
After what seemed like an eternity of nothing more than rumors to go off of, news broke this past June confirming that former DC President-turned-full-time-movie-and-TV-producer Geoff Johns is actually penning the screenplay for the flick. To the uninitiated, this doesn’t sound like much of a big deal. But when you factor in how this scribe with the Midas touch wrote what was arguably the best Green Lantern comic book run ever (spanning nine years, no less), well, then you’d assume we’re in for one hell of a treat.
All that aside, the time has come for us to discuss which actors will be cast as Hal Jordan and John Stewart. As you may have heard, there are the constant rumors of Tom Cruise playing the former, which remains a hot talking point given his status in Hollywood.
Naturally, fan art has begun circulating placing the power ring on the Mission: Impossible star’s finger. This time, though, it’s Daniel Savage who’s brought his own interpretation to the table, sharing the image seen below on his Instagram page.
If this vision were to carry over to the silver screen, then Cruise would be wearing something much closer to Hal’s comic book counterpart than what was offered in the Ryan Reynolds flick. Here, we see the traditional white gloves, not to mention a costume that looks more material than heavy CGI would require.
No matter what the outcome may be, it’s my hope that Green Lantern Corps not only see the light of day, but that it also meet the standards of myself and others who so love the source material. Make us proud, Mr. Johns.
