On the day after Tina Fey‘s decorated 30 Rock wrapped shooting for good, we’re catching another glimpse into the next steps of her career with the second trailer for her upcoming rom-com Admission, co-starring Paul Rudd.
The role will see Fey in a familiar one, playing a single, career-focused 40-something woman struggling with the idea of motherhood. Admission, though, offers a fresh take: She’s already a mother, she just doesn’t know it.
Fey plays Portia Nathan, a Princeton admissions officer whose by-the-book life veers off course when John Halsey (Rudd), the co-founder of an experimental New Hampshire school, calls her up with a request to visit the school. During her visit, she meets misfit Jeremiah (Nat Wolf), whom Halsey declares a “prodigy.” The visit brings Nathan’s past bubbling to the surface, as Halsey concludes Jeremiah is the son Nathan gave up in college. The discovery puts Nathan on an emotional roller coaster as she tries to push her son through the admissions process.
This second trailer gives us more of a glimpse into Nathan’s professional life, showing us what her job as admissions officer entails. The movie will prove to be an interesting look into a job that most people come in contact with, but few see the human side of (as Nathan says in the trailer, “Of course everyone thinks we’re sadists, that we like saying no. We are in this job for one reason: to say yes”). The mix of a not-so-typical career, the bond between a mother and son, and a romance with Halsey promises to be a charming one, and with Paul Weitz (About a Boy) at the helm, the film is sure to give you that warm, fuzzy feeling inside.
The Rudd-Fey pairing, too, promises to make your heart swell. With both actors known for playing misfit, dorky characters (think Fey’s Liz Lemon on 30 Rock and Rudd’s Peter Klaven in I Love You, Man), it’s a matchup few won’t fall in love with.
And with 30 Rock drawing to a close, Admission will bring Fey her first starring role in a movie without her show to fall back on. The movie’s March 8th release will fall close to the series’ finale, and the film will likely set the stage for the future of Fey’s big-screen career. But with Rudd’s growing list of cinematic successes and Fey’s fan base, the movie could set her career rolling in the right direction.
Was this the right way for Fey to move exclusively to the big screen? Will Fey’s and Rudd’s charm be able to carry the movie? Catch the second trailer for Admission below and tell us what you think in the comments.
