Looks like Wonder Woman won’t be the only comic book movie making a bid for Oscar gold this year.
Walt Disney Pictures has announced today that they’ll be staging For You Consideration campaigns for both Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok and James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, both of which have been wildly successful critically and commercially. Not only that, but Marvel fans have welcomed each of the aforementioned films with open arms, embracing them wholeheartedly as they enjoy all the delights that they have to offer.
In the case of Vol. 2, Disney is seeking nominations for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for James Gunn, Best Actor for Chris Pratt, Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff and Best Supporting Actor for Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker, Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel. Not to mention a number of technical categories.
When it comes to Ragnarok, the studio’s hoping for Best Picture, Best Director for Taika Waititi, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor for Chris Hemsworth, Best Supporting Actor for Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo and Jeff Goldblum, and Best Supporting Actress for Cate Blanchett and Tessa Thompson. As with Guardians, the threequel will also be looking for some technical nods, too.
If you ask us, having either film break into any of the major awards categories would be a huge surprise. Don’t get us wrong, both are excellent movies, but we all know how reluctant the Academy is to give out Oscars to anything inspired by a comic book.
Will Thor: Ragnarok and/or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 be the ones to change that? In an ideal world, yes. But in the world we live in, well, they’ll probably just have to make do with their financial and critical success – which, in all honesty, is far from the worst thing.
