More often than not, when we sit down after a long day and put on a movie, we often reach for something that’s easy to watch, like a comedy or an action film. In a world where we often feel the need to shield our genuine emotions, there comes a breaking point where we begin to crave a film that will provide us an opportunity to release them.
One of those films is the powerful death row drama The Green Mile based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name and starring Tom Hanks in his prime.
Set in the 1930s, the film follows Paul Edgecomb, the head guard of a death row prison in which he meets John Coffey, an African-American inmate accused of murdering two young girls. As John’s execution date draws nearer, Paul must make the ultimate decision when he discovers that John has a miraculous gift.
The film made waves with its initial release back in 1999, making over $286 million worldwide and receiving four Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Writing Based on Material Previously Published, and Best Sound.
Over two decades have passed since then and The Green Mile has faded from people’s memories, replaced with the latest blockbuster releases. But with the film now available to stream on HBO Max and Peacock, it would be a huge missed opportunity to not experience the highs and lows of this masterpiece.
Tom Hanks has continued to dominate the entertainment industry and doesn’t look to be slowing down any time soon. His most recent appearance was in the post-apocalyptic film Finch, which you can stream on Apple TV Plus after giving The Green Mile the watch it deserves.
