Third Kick-Ass Movie Officially Moving Forward, Will Reboot The Titular Hero

Empire brings word today that Matthew Vaughn has mapped out plans for a third Kick-Ass movie that will reboot the titular, crimefighting hero.

Director Matthew Vaughn and his newfound production banner, Marv Studios, have announced plans for a third Kick-Ass movie designed to reboot the titular teen – not unlike how Mark Millar continues to evolve the character in the original comics.

Word comes by way of Empire, where Vaughn peeled back the curtain on Marv Studios and its three new projects: a Kingsman universe, the long-rumored Hit-Girl spinoff, and Kick-Ass 3, which will herald the return of our crimefighting hero after almost five years spent in the shadows. Just don’t be fooled into thinking that Aaron-Taylor Johnson is about to suit up as Dave Lizewski once more.

That’s because Vaughn’s Kick-Ass reboot hopes to bring a clean slate to the cult action series, and, as Empire points out, the director “does strongly hint that Patience Lee, an African-American single mother who’s taken on the vigilante mantle, could be in the frame.”

We’re going to reboot Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl. Look what Mark Millar is doing with the comic for clues.

As a comic book property that spends just as much time poking fun at superhero tropes as Deadpool, Kick-Ass is ripe for the picking, and it’s small wonder why Matthew Vaughn hasn’t announced a reboot of the series sooner.

Not that it matters, of course, as a third Kick-Ass film is still very much moving forward under the stewardship of Marv Studios, while that mooted Hit-Girl solo movie will likely focus on Mindy McCready in her twilight years – or, on the other hand, a flashback to her time spent under the tutelage of Big Daddy, who was originally brought to life by the inimitable Nicolas Cage.
