Things only continue to look bleak and dour in the latest photo and storyboards to emerge for Logan, James Mangold's 2017 sequel.

Cold, dour, bleak, raw – all words one would use to describe the outpouring of black-and-white photos for Logan, James Mangold’s 2017 sequel that is set to bring about Hugh Jackman’s final appearance as Wolverine.

Shouldering the burden of a compromised healing factor and a world-weary attitude to match, Jackman’s transformation to Old Man Logan is a sombre one, and lays the foundation for a superhero movie that looks set to be much more introspective and, in many ways, intimate that what we’ve seen before. Indeed, the inaugural trailer gave us a fair taste of what to expect, as Jackman’s aging character comes to terms with a mutant population that is fast on the decline.

This latest media dump only continues to double down on that jet-black tone, picturing Logan in a grimy industrial location, and Mangold’s time on Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line certainly shines through. As for the pair of storyboards, the first shot finds Hugh Jackman outside the Liberty Motel, where police and an ambulance are attending to some sort of accident (murder?).

Whatever the situation, our weathered protagonist clearly has a bone to pick, seen here unsheathing his claws and ready to pounce. It’s impossible to get a sense of the context from only two storyboards but at the very least, fans can expect plenty of R-rated action come 2017.

Last but not least, the ever-active Wponx Instagram account has unveiled a new environment shot, which you can check out down below.

Logan, also starring Dafne Keen as X-23, Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, Patrick Stewart and Eriq La Salle, is on course to hit theaters on March 3, 2017.
