The new trailer for Oz: The Great and Powerful hides the identity of the Wicked Witch of the West and invites us to ponder about the movie’s witches until we see it in theaters.
Oz: The Great and Powerful tells the story of Oscar Diggs, a magician who wants to be great in Kansas, but gets hurled off by a tornado to the vibrant, magical world of Oz, where he meets three witches: Theodora, Evanora and Glinda. Everyone looks up to Oscar to be the savior of Oz, but there is more to him than meets the eye. As his quest changes from the pursuit of his selfish desires to saving the residents of Oz from the famous Wicked Witch, Oscar must decide which witch is the evil sorceress. His adventure leads him to become the wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Out of all three witches, we’re confident to strike Michelle Williams’ character, Glinda, off the list because of her role in The Wizard of Oz. She’s the perky witch who welcomes Dorothy to Oz and helps her with her journey home. And if you’ve never seen the 1939 adaptation, the picture below can try to convince you of Glinda’s good nature, with all those children surrounding her.
That leaves Theodora, played by Mila Kunis, and Evanora, played by Rachel Weisz. From what we know of the Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz, her skin is colored green but from Oz: The Great and Powerful’s trailer, we’re led to believe that she didn’t always have that appearance.
If we go just by color and appearance, Evanora seems to be wearing a green necklace and wielding a lot of green power, which might foreshadow her identity as the Wicked Witch. Then again, Sam Raimi, the movie’s director, might be using the element of surprise to take our minds off Kunis’ character as the evil witch. Thus, it could practically be either of them, as both have the potential to be the Wicked Witch of the West.
All the same, we can’t wait to see the Wicked Witch and her horde of flying monkeys in Oz: The Great and Powerful on March 8th, 2013. In the meantime, do you have any idea which witch she might be from the trailer below? Let us know your thoughts.
