I’m not quite sure what the opposite of a surprise is, but the overwhelming outpouring of love for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is exactly that; not a single person with a passing interest in Spider-Man expected anything other than two hours of unadulterated awe from Across the Spider-Verse, and now that it’s finally in cinemas, the prophecy has come full circle.
And while the big question on my mind, personally, is still that of which noun opposes “surprise,” the rest of the internet seems dead set on wondering why the hell Beyond the Spider-Verse won’t get here sooner.
Let’s face it, everyone; Across the Spider-Verse has won the concept of comic book movies; we’ve officially peaked for the year and we can safely pump the brakes on all MCU and DC content from here on out. Indeed, until Beyond the Spider-Verse is on our doorsteps, hype for other cape shenanigans won’t be quite the same.
Of course, the egging for Beyond the Spider-Verse‘s release is just a fun, if very valid, sentiment; in no way should the second half of this delectable two-parter be rushed in any way, shape, form, or fashion. All we’re saying is, the fact that we have no time machine available to jump to the film’s release date stings a bit more than usual.
Luckily, it won’t be another five-year wait for the third and final step in the Spider-Verse trilogy; where Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse wound up releasing five years apart, we won’t even have to wait a full year for Beyond the Spider-Verse; that in itself is celebration-worthy, even if any amount of waiting feels staggeringly devastating.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now playing in theaters.
