One of the most bizarre sentiments to emerge in the aftermath of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Infinity Saga is the number of backers who believe Thanos was completely right in dedicating his existence to wiping half of all living creatures from the face of the universe.
Of course, you’d expect those throwing their weight behind the #ThanosWasRight movement would imagine themselves to be safe from the blip, because there surely can’t be that many doomsayers out there crossing their fingers in the hopes they’d be turned into dust and be left to drift away into nothingness.
In a somewhat terrifying turn of events, though, the purple genocidal warlord has gained a surprising backer in none other than James Cameron. Speaking to TIME, the director of the three of the four highest-grossing features in the history of cinema outed himself as a Thanos supporter, which gets scarier the longer you think about it.
“I can relate to Thanos… I thought he had a pretty viable answer. The problem is nobody is going to put up their hand to volunteer to be the half that has to go.”
Looking at how he’s invested so much time and energy into environmentalism and protecting the planet at all costs – never mind the enormous wealth he’s amassed over one of the most successful careers Hollywood has ever seen – Cameron probably has the finances to make it happen if he really wants to.
He’s no fan of Marvel, which could be the one benefit of the Titanic architect potentially taking his cues from the cinematic universe’s first major big bad.
