Since 2010 the Insidious franchise has been gradually expanding into one of the biggest things in horror cinema. Three sequels have followed, with the fourth entry Insidious: The Red Door coming this summer. But this juggernaut isn’t stopping here, as in January a spin-off entitled Thread was announced.
That’s now confirmed to be titled Thread: An Insidious Tale, and will star Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani. Nanjiani burst into the MCU as Kingo in 2021’s The Eternals, though after that film’s poor box office showing and the lack of any firm sequel plans it seems he’s got the time to pop up in one more major cinematic universe.
According to Deadline, this “offshoot project” will see Moore and Nanjiani play a husband and wife grieving the loss of their daughter. So when they hear of a spell that can throw them back in time to prevent her death, they leap on it regardless of the consequences. Given that this is Insidious we’re betting that things are going to go wrong fairly quickly for the pair.
There’s also another key MCU connection, as Moon Knight‘s Jeremy Slater has been tapped for directorial duties, making this his feature film debut. That may not bode well for Moon Knight season two, though that (and his work on Fox’s The Exorcist and Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy) proves he has a firm grip on disturbing psychological horror and bizarre imagery.
Nanjiani is currently working on the new Ghostbusters movie and the ongoing writer’s strike may mean that the script remains incomplete, so Thread might be some way out yet. Even so, Blumhouse has assembled some considerable talent here, so let’s hope this Insidious spinoff arrives sooner rather than later.
