With exceptional masterpieces such as The Shining, Cujo, and It echoing Stephen King’s writing brilliance in cinematic form, it hardly comes as a surprise that The Boogeyman, the latest horror venture inspired by King’s work, is having an absolute field day as far as reviews are concerned. And if a trip down memory lane in the vein of childhood trauma and fear of the Boogeyman is your preferred bread and butter, then get ready to have your mind blown.
All across Twitter thus far, the newest horror extravaganza — which touches upon sensitive elements of emotional grief and tragedy — is already being hailed as “one of the most terrifying films of the year.” In that same vein, other critics are praising its nerve-jangling moments, jump-scares, and creative filmmaking. Of course, when crafting a project inspired by King’s Earth-shattering horror, such reviews are to be expected.
Looking back at the film’s initial plan and the reviews we now have, it feels almost criminal that the King adaptation was originally set to be available for online streaming purposes only. However, when King himself stepped in to declare that sending the movie directly to streaming would be a disastrous idea, the decision was made for the movie to be pulled from Hulu and deservedly shot out into the world for a theatrical release.
And if these early reviews are of any stark indication, then it’s clear that horror fanatics and King die-hards are once again set to strap in for a wild ride. For those interested, The Boogeyman will haunt theaters starting June 2.
